These results indicate that phoP may control the expression of the rpoS gene ( Table 2 and Fig. 2 ) , as substantiated by previous reports that PhoP controls the expression of the RpoS-regulated spv virulence genes and rpoS gene ( Heithoff et al. , 1997 ; Tu et al. , 2006 ) .
