In the comparison of tolC strains in an Mg2-free buffer , the PhoPQ-activated modifica tions resulted in a more-than-fourfold increase in the barrier function against the penetration of a cationic dye , ethidium , in comparison with the phoP null mutant , in which the modification was absent ( Fig. 2 , left panel ) .
